John O’Shea has signed a one year contract with Sunderland under new boss Simon Grayson, who brought in plenty of Irish players during his spell as Preston boss.
The veteran Irish defender had been released by the Black Cats following their relegation from the Premier League, but new manager Grayson has decided to extend the experienced centre back’s stay at the Stadium of Light.
The 36 year old Irish international skippered Sunderland last season, but the club endured a miserable season under David Moyes, finishing at the bottom of England’s top flight.
“Republic of Ireland international John O’Shea has agreed a new one-year deal at the Stadium of Light,” said a statement on the official Sunderland website.
“The captain moved to Wearside in 2011 and during a six-year spell became the club’s leading appearance maker in the Premier League, a competition he won on five occasions during his time at Manchester United.
“O’Shea, 36, will link up with his team-mates next week after representing Ireland in their World Cup qualifying campaign at the start of June.”
O’Shea has made over 200 appearances for Sunderland since joining the club.
