YBIG (You Boys in Green) are delighted to announce a joint collaboration with EnglandFans FC who are joining forces to celebrate the life of England and Ireland legend, Jack Charlton, with a fundraising fixture at Ashington A.F.C. in the town of Ashington, Northumberland, the place where Jack was born and grew up. The game takes place on Saturday 9th July, almost two years to the day since Jack left us and promises to be a memorable occasion. Jack’s widow, Pat and son, Peter, will be in attendance and the Government of Ireland will have official representation in the form of Ms Carina O’Brien, Vice-Consul General of Ireland for the North of England.
Money raised will be donated to the Jack Charlton Disabled Anglers Association and The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
Aidan Brett, YBIG manager, said: “After a couple of tough years for everybody, it is a great pleasure to finally make it to Ashington with the Irish fans team to honour Big Jack.
Unfortunately, with the dawn of the covid 19 outbreak, we didn’t get the chance to pay our respects to the man who brought so much joy and positivity to our nation. From bringing us to our first major championship at Euro 88, then to Italia 90 and USA 94, Jack really made a positive impact, to not just the Irish football community, but to all. Memories are still shared of those great days and are passed on to the younger generation, who didn’t get to witness his great character and what he did for football in Ireland.
To play a fans game against England in Jack’s hometown, and in front of his wife Pat and his family, it is a great honour for our team. I would especially like to thank Garford Beck, the EnglandFans Fc team and Ashington AFC for accommodating us and organising this memorial cup game. We greatly appreciate all the work involved.”
EnglandFans FC Founder and Team Manager, Garford Beck said: “Jack’s sad death, coming when it did, during the Covid pandemic, meant that we were unable to play a fans match in his honour until now. In fact, our two fans’ groups were in touch with each other almost immediately following Jack’s sad passing on 10th July 2020, such was the desire to do something in Jack’s memory. I am extremely grateful to Liam Murray and all at YBIG for their goodwill, assistance and co-operation in making this tribute match possible. We look forward to locking horns with our friends from Ireland and have a bit of a score to settle, having lost 4-1 the last time we met, in the shadow of Clontarf Castle, back in June 2015.”
