Masterson included in Liverpool squad to face United

Conor Masterson has been named in Liverpool’s squad to face Manchester United.

The table-topping Reds will host their bitter rivals at Anfield on Sunday, and have several defensive injury concerns ahead of the crucial clash.

Masterson, 20, has been a key performer at centre half for Liverpool’s U23 side this season, and was previously named in the squad which beat Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield in the Champions League quarter-finals last season.

The Irish defender will provide defensive cover for Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez ruled out through injury.

Masterson has risen through the ranks at Anfield after swapping Lucan United for Liverpool in 2012, and formerly captained the Reds’ U18 side.

He was also named as the FAI’s International Player of the Year in 2015, and has represented the Boys in Green at underage level.

The 20-year-old has been described by Klopp as a very confident player, and may have further chances to impress over the hectic Christmas period.
