FIFA have opened proceedings against Neil Taylor over his horror challenge on Seamus Coleman, which left the Irish captain with a double leg fracture.
Taylor received a straight red card for the tackle, and Coleman is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off the pitch at the Aviva.
According to Sky Sports, the Welsh FA has been informed of FIFA opening proceedings against Taylor and will review the incident. FIFA will study match referee Nicola Rizzoli’s match report, and a hearing is likely to take place in the next two weeks.
The punishment for a red card at international level is an automatic one-match ban, but FIFA are likely to extend Taylor’s ban to at least three matches given the severity of the incident, which would rule the Aston Villa defender out of Wales’ next three World Cup qualifiers against Serbia, Austria and Moldova.
Taylor reportedly tried to visit Coleman in the Irish dressing room after the 0-0 draw at the Aviva, and also sent his good wishes to the Everton full back.
Coleman was released from hospital yesterday after successful surgery, and Martin O’Neill provided a positive update on the 28 year old.
“I think he’s doing much better now,†the Ireland manager revealed. “It’s not something you’re going to get over in 24 hours, 36 hours. He’s in much better spirits.
“It’s encouraging to see. He’s very positive, which I knew he would be. It’s a tough injury. Could he get over it? If anybody can quickly, then Seamus can do that.”
