Jon Walters set to sign for Burnley

Burnley have agreed a £3 million deal to sign Jon Walters from Stoke.

The 33 year old Irish international has been at Stoke since 2010, but started just 13 league games for the Potters last season.

Walters is now set for a medical at Burnley in the next 48 hours, and will join his international teammates Jeff Hendrick, Robbie Brady, Stephen Ward and Kevin Long at Turf Moor.

The industrious striker scored 62 goals in 271 appearances for Stoke, who dismissed an initial offer from the Clarets as “derisory”.

His 43 Premier League goal tally for Stoke is a club record, and many fans at the bet365 Stadium will be sad to see Walters depart.

He has reportedly been offered a two year deal by Sean Dyche’s side, with an option to extend his contract for a third year. He will compete with the likes of Andre Gray – who has been linked with Everton in recent weeks – Sam Vokes and Ashley Barnes up top for the Clarets.

Walters is an important player for the boys in green, and has scored 14 goals – including a crucial equalizer against Austria last month – in 49 international appearances for the Republic of Ireland.

Burnley are also hoping to strike a deal for wantaway Leeds United left back Charlie Taylor, who is valued at £5 million, and would provide competition for Stephen Ward in Dyche’s defence.
