THE RECORD’S OF REPUBLIC OF IRELAND MANAGER’S

The record of the managers of the Republic of Ireland shows the games played, wins, losses and draws. Each win is awarded two points, each draw a point, each goal scored a point and for each goal conceded a point is taken away. It’s the only fair way I can think of.

Mick Meagan                12        0          3          9          7          26        -16       0

Mick Meagan was Ireland first manager and took over at a time when Ireland were poor. His term lasted from 1969 – 1971. He never won a game and the heaviest defeat under his reign was a 0-4 defeat away to Hungary in 1969. He was replaced by Liam Tuohy whose term started with a 0-6 defeat by Austria. His biggest win was a 3-2 victory over Ecuador in Brazil! Sean Thomas took over as caretaker for one match in Norway which finished 1-1.

Johnny Giles then took over as Ireland boss in 1973 and immediately set out turning the Irish team into a professional outfit. His term lasted until 1980 with his heaviest defeat being a 1-4 loss in Czechoslovakia with a weakened team. The biggest win under Giles was a 4-0 win over Turkey when Don Given’s scored all Ireland’s goals and Jimmy Holmes missed a penalty. When Giles resigned, Alan Kelly took charge for a single game which turned out to be a 2-0 win over Switzerland.

Eoin Hand was Ireland’s sixth manager and took over Ireland supposed “golden generation”. His term started well but faded badly. During his time as boss Ireland achieved their biggest-ever win (8-0 v Malta) and their heaviest-ever defeat (0-7 v Brazil).

An Englishman, Jack Charlton, was appointed in succession to Hand and under his term Ireland were to enjoy our most successful period in our history. It all ended after a dark night in Anfield but we had made it to two World Cup finals as well as one European Championship finals. His biggest win was 5-0 (a few times) and his heaviest defeat was 0-3 on a rainy night in Portugal.

Mick McCarthy took over from Charlton in 1996 and in his six years in the job he got Ireland to every play off in competitive play and the 2002 World Cup finals. His biggest win was 5-0 and his heaviest defeat was a 2-4 loss in Russia.

Don Givens took temperory charge for the first time before the FAI appointed Brian Kerr as next Irish boss. Under Kerr Ireland had two 3-0 wins and one 0-3 loss.

Stephen Staunton followed Kerr and in what proved to be a disasterous appointment, Ireland’s biggest win was 5- 0 and heaviest defeat was a 2-5 loss in Cyprus.

After Staunton’s dismissal, Don Givens was left to take care of the team until, on Wednesday, 13th February 2008 Italian Giovanni Trapattoni was given the task of leading Ireland to South Africa in 2010.
